What is the Adaptive and Sustainable Infrastructure (ASI) Hub?
The proposed Australian Research Council (ARC) Industrial Transformation Research Hub will bring together industry, government and leading Australian universities to address some of the major challenges facing energy and critical infrastructure.
Hosted by Curtin University, the Hub is proposed as a five-year research program with academic collaboration across RMIT University, UNSW, University of Technology Sydney, Western Sydney University and The University of Queensland.
Its research program is centred on four interconnected themes: Multi-Hazard Resilience & Infrastructure Protection, Digital Intelligence & AI, Circular Materials for Low-Carbon Build, and Workforce, Finance & Policy.
Digital Intelligence and AI: where RemSense fits
For RemSense, there is particularly strong alignment with the Digital Intelligence & AI research theme, which includes digital twins, AI and machine learning, autonomous systems, IoT-enabled inspection and predictive maintenance. The Hub aims to develop digital solutions spanning infrastructure design, installation, monitoring, maintenance and ultimately end-of-life.
RemSense CEO Warren Cook on the ASI Hub
RemSense CEO Warren Cook said the collaboration closely aligned with the company’s strategy of transforming complex visual and spatial data into practical asset intelligence.
“There is a very natural fit between the direction of the ASI Hub and the work RemSense is already undertaking across digital twins, remote inspection, high-resolution reality capture and AI-assisted asset intelligence.
Working alongside Curtin University, researchers and other industry partners gives us the opportunity to help take emerging research beyond the laboratory and into practical solutions that can be deployed across real industrial assets.
For RemSense, that is where the real value lies: using technology to improve how infrastructure is inspected, monitored and maintained, while reducing risk and the need to put people into hazardous environments.”
virtualplant and RemSense’s AI research and development
RemSense develops and commercialises its virtualplant platform, combining high-resolution imagery, LiDAR, photogrammetry and spatial data to support remote asset inspection, asset management, condition monitoring and data-driven decision-making. The company is also progressing research and development in areas including AI/ML-enabled defect detection, automated anomaly and change identification and predictive maintenance.
How RemSense will contribute to the ASI Hub
Through its involvement in the proposed Hub, RemSense expects to contribute technical and industry expertise to research direction, problem definition, testing and validation, and the translation of research outcomes into practical industry applications. Where appropriate, this may also include access to operational experience, technology platforms, datasets and industry use cases.
Potential areas of collaboration include AI-assisted inspection, automated anomaly and change detection, predictive maintenance and the integration of remotely captured inspection data into digital– twin environments. These capabilities are designed to reduce inspection time and cost, minimise personnel exposure and support better-informed maintenance decisions.
An industry-led research model
The proposed Hub reflects an industry-led model in which research is built around real industry problems, with participating organisations helping shape priorities and projects from problem definition through to practical deployment.
RemSense looks forward to working with Curtin University and the broader ASI Hub collaboration to help turn advanced research into practical, commercially deployable technologies for Australia’s energy, resources and infrastructure sectors.
Frequently asked questions
The Adaptive and Sustainable Infrastructure (ASI) Hub is a proposed Australian Research Council Industrial Transformation Research Hub, hosted by Curtin University, that brings industry, government and universities together to make energy and critical infrastructure safer, more resilient and more sustainable.
RemSense Technologies (ASX:REM) supports the proposed ASI Hub and expects to contribute expertise, its virtualplant platform and industry use cases to research in AI-assisted inspection, anomaly and change detection, and predictive maintenance.
AI infrastructure inspection uses artificial intelligence to review imagery and sensor data from assets such as offshore platforms, plants and bridges, flagging defects, corrosion and changes automatically so engineers can focus on the issues that matter.
A digital twin is an accurate virtual copy of a physical asset. By comparing new inspection data against the twin over time, operators can spot deterioration early and plan maintenance before failures occur, rather than reacting to them.
Remote asset inspection lets engineers inspect a facility from their desk using high-resolution reality capture and visual twins, such as RemSense’s virtualplant, reducing site visits and the need to send people into hazardous environments.
