Drone Flora Surveying for Environmental Assessment in Renewable Energy Projects

Project background

Fast, Accurate Flora Surveys — Without Setting Foot on Overgrown Terrain

RemSense was engaged by IGE to conduct flora surveys across 30 sites, approximately 300km north of Perth, WA. These areas, earmarked for wind farm development, were heavily overgrown with thick undergrowth, scrub, and trees.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) required a detailed flora survey of the disturbance footprint, plus at least 50 meters surrounding it.

key challenges

Dense Vegetation:
The thick undergrowth made the sites virtually impenetrable, preventing traditional ground-based surveys.

Environmental & Safety Risks:
Accessing the sites would have required extensive clearing or posed hazards to survey teams, potentially disturbing the local ecosystem

Our Solution

RemSense deployed a UAV mapping system equipped with an iXM Phase One camera (35mm lens) to capture high-resolution aerial imagery. The survey covered:

  • 24 potential wind generator sites
  • 5 additional areas designated for supporting infrastructure.

The data captured was geo-referenced and of exceptional quality, providing the information needed to assess flora removal impacts and monitor vegetation in buffer zones.

By using drones, we eliminated the need for physical access, reducing ecological disturbance and improving safety.

Results

  • Completion Speed: All 30 sites surveyed in two working days by a two-person crew.
  • Technical Details:
    • Survey area: 24 sites at 0.12 hectares (250m x 50m) each + 5 assorted areas
    • Flight speed: 5m/s
    • Flight height: 50m AGL
    • Ground Sampling Distance (GSD): 0.54cm/px
    • Total images: 13,788
  • Processing: Images processed in-house using Pix4D matic to produce 30 geo-tiff ortho-mosaics, reviewed in QGIS and Global Mapper.

The high-resolution imagery allowed the team to identify flora for preservation and clearance, enabling the project to move quickly into its construction phase while meeting all EPA requirements

Feedback

RemSense were professional in assisting with scoping the job requirements and followed up by completing the site work in a safe and efficient manner reflective of a professional company.
The outcome to IGE was a very high standard result achieving the required images to progress our project deliverables in a short tasking delivery schedule.
