Opening the Doors to Telethon Kids Institute — From Anywhere in the World

Project background

How Telethon Kids Institute Uses virtualplant to Improve Remote Access and Engagement

Telethon Kids Institute embarked on a project to make its facilities more accessible and visible to a wide range of stakeholders. The goal was to give prospective staff, researchers, donors, and patients’ families the ability to explore the Institute without needing to be on site, and to allow maintenance teams to access sensitive areas without lengthy health and safety processes.

key challenges

Pandemic: Being located within a children’s hospital meant strict health protocols. The pandemic amplified the need for remote access, with limited opportunities for in-person visits.

Labs Inaccessibility: Research and testing labs are highly controlled environments, typically restricted to protect sensitive work and prevent contamination. This created challenges interstate or international visitors, donors, and researchers who needed insight into these spaces.

Our Solution

The Institute implemented virtualplant, RemSense’s advanced visual twin platform, to transform how people interact with its facilities. This solution enabled:

Remote Accessibility:

Stakeholders can explore the Institute’s spaces from anywhere, breaking down physical barriers and providing seamless remote access.

Children’s Environment Engagement:

Classrooms and interactive learning areas are now viewable online, allowing children, parents, schools, and community groups  to see the Institute’s vibrant learning spaces.

Research and Testing Lab Visibility:

Restricted research and testing labs can now be showcased safely, giving external researchers, donors, or maintenance teams an inside view while maintaining strict environmental controls.

Work Location Identification:

Staff and visitors can pinpoint specific work areas before arrival, improving navigation and efficiency on site.

Results

  • Improved stakeholder engagement through immersive, interactive facility tours
  • Expanded collaboration opportunities with researchers around the world
  • Enhanced donor relations by providing transparency and visibility into state-of-the-art research facilities
  • Streamlined maintenance planning, reducing the need for in-person site access

Feedback

“The digital twin of the laboratories offered a solution to engaging with audiences in a COVID world where face-to-face interaction has become more difficult. It essentially allows researchers based remotely to walk through a virtual version of our laboratories and familiarise themselves with the collaborative layout and state-of-the-art equipment at hand. As a growing research institute, we are constantly collaborating and partnering with researchers across the globe and virtualplant makes this process easier and safer. The use of virtualplant has virtually and visually opened our doors to so many new opportunities”
