Drone Imaging that Drives Better Canola Trial Results

Project background
To support an agricultural field trial York, WA, we were engaged to capture ultra-detailed aerial imagery of canola plots across a 1-hectare site. The aim? To help researchers calculate germination rates by counting emerged plants per plot, a critical measure of early crop success.
The captured imagery fed into a multi-step pipeline:
Image stitching into orthomosaics
Plot delineation
Cropping individual plot images
Feeding each into a machine learning model for automated plant detection and counting
key challenges
The researchers needed imagery with a 1mm spatial resolution from 12 metres altitude.
That’s not your everyday mapping job; hitting this resolution meant:
Flying extremely low and slow
Carefully planning overlaps
Choosing the right high-performance sensors
Our Solution
We deployed to cameras to compare outcomes:
Primary: Phase One iXM 100MP, known for exceptional image clarity, colour depth, and its ability to pull sharp detail even in shadows making it perfect for identifying small, spread-out plants across field plots.
Secondary: DJI P1 45MP, flown as benchmark
Each camera flew at customised altitudes and speeds to meet resolution targets while covering the site efficiently.
Results
Why the iXM Made a Difference
The Phase One camera delivered incredible clarity. Every tiny plant, texture, and shadow was clearly captured. That made downstream steps like cropping and ML processing far more accurate and reliable.
Compared to the DJI P1, the iXM provided:
Better shadow detail (important for small plant spacing)
Consistent sharpness across the full frame
Higher-quality input for AI analysis
This wasn’t just about testing drone tech—it was about enabling smarter agricultural research.
Our ultra-high-res imagery helped researchers automate plant counting with greater precision. That means:
